Autism Group Awards over $11,000 in Grants

 

The Johnson County Autism Support Group has awarded more than $11,000 in grants to area schools.

The grants are part of the group’s continuing effort to enhance the education experience for the over 300 children with autism in local school systems. This is the second year the group has offered the grants to Johnson County educators, and the response was overwhelming.

Grants were awarded as follows:

  • Trinda Barocas, Creekside Elementary, “Make It Make Sense to Me,” $350
  • Toni Flowers, Special Services Johnson County, “Tasks Galore,” $300
  • Lisa Fisk, Maple Grove Elementary, “Star Sensory Station,” $500
  • Terry Widener, Clark Pleasant Middle School, “Sensory Room,” $500
  • Sharron Freed, Earlywood Education Center, “Social Communication Integration,” $646
  • Julie Mauzey, Westwood Elementary, “Communication for Everyone,” $500
  • Katie Sebahar, Pleasant & Maple Grove Elementary, “Social Communication for Preschool,” $738
  • Kristin Rayl, Center Grove Middle School Central, “Talk to Me,” $250

The Johnson County Autism Support Group hosts monthly meetings and activities for area families affected by autism. For more information, visit www.jcasg.org.

The Johnson County Autism Support Group, Inc. offers a grant to benefit Johnson County students with autism. As part of our effort to partner with educators in our community, the grant is open to all Johnson County teachers, teacher aids, teacher assistants, school counselors, student groups, parent groups or other school organizations. Its purpose is to fund projects, teaching aids and equipment that would enhance the school experience for kids with autism.

 

Grant requests should describe the benefit to autistic students and should be submitted to JCASG no later than December 15, 2007. Please mail 2 copies to:

Or e-mail as an attachment to president@jcasg.org . Once the completed application and supporting documents are received, there will be a preliminary review by the President and Vice President of JCASG. The board will then review each application by a blind judging process (without identification of applicants) and make final decisions regarding the number awarded and dollar amount of the grant(s) in February 2008.
